Bacterial Transformation: Natural vs. Artificial Methods Explained

In this video, I look at bacterial transformation, focusing on the two main types: natural and artificial transformation.
Natural transformation occurs when bacteria naturally take up DNA from their environment, usually from nearby lysed cells.
Artificial transformation uses lab techniques that encourage bacteria to take up DNA. Such techniques include polycations, heat shock, protoplast formation, lipids, and electroporation.
One thing that natural and artificial transformations have in common is that the bacteria must be competent. That is, they must have the specific genes enabling them to take up DNA and they must be expressing the proteins.
