BMW N20 Turbocharger Replacement DIY (2012-2018 BMW F30/31 328i, F32 428i, F22 228i, N20 Engine)

►High-mileage and abused N20 engines can have turbocharger failures. Wastegate rattle is a common but non-critical issue, but leaking seals letting oil pass into the intake or exhaust can be big. Replacing your BMW F30's turbocharger is the only way to remedy the issue, and that can be a pretty big job. While you're not opening up the engine, the turbocharger is tucked tightly to the side of the engine, making a handful of fasteners a challenge to reach. That said, just follow the DIY, and you'll have all the steps to make the replacement. All you have to do is bring your patience.

N20 turbocharger failure can happen from leaking seals or bad bearings within the CHRA. Most often, you'll be able to feel the car beginning to run poorly. Occasionally, it'll also trigger a Drivetrain Malfunction warning on the instrument cluster. Either way, you must replace the turbocharger or potentially cause significant damage to your engine. This is also a great opportunity for an aftermarket turbocharger if you're after more power.
