In the fifth of the RAF Centre for Air Power Studies (RAF CAPS) rarely-seen before historic ‘leadership’ themed videos, Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir William Dickson GCB KBE DSO AFC is interviewed by Group Captain (later Air Vice-Marshal) Tony Mason CB CBE DL at the RAF Staff College, Bracknell, in January 1979.
Throughout the video, Sir William chats candidly about his 44-year career, which saw him rise from a trainee pilot in the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) to the premier position in the British Armed Forces, Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS). Sir William joined the RNAS in 1916 and, in 1917, was posted to HMS FURIOUS where he was instrumental in pioneering deck landing trials, eventually taking part in the first raid in history from an aircraft carrier.
Throughout the interview, he charts his experiences, from arguing with Lord Trenchard whilst serving on the Air Staff as a Flight Lieutenant, to his utter amazement at being informed by Lord Tedder that he was to be the future Chief of the Air Staff (CAS). Viewers are asked to make allowance for the 1970s video quality as Sir William’s thoughts on leadership, and the humble manner in which he discusses his experiences, make this interview a significant contribution to the history of the Royal Air Force and very much worth watching.
