What is the truth about living tree stumps? I acknowledge existence of a fungal network through which nutrients and carbon can move between plants. But, to sustain a huge root system right through the year (even when the soils are dry) requires a direct root graft. Root grafting also explains the occurrence of 'flashback': when an otherwise healthy tree dies when herbicide is applied to a nearby freshly cut stump.
