Every year we carry out our Italian firefighting aircraft tour, and 2024 was no exception. Unlike our previous trips to Sicily, this time we explored the area around Rome. For an aviation spotter, this region offers plenty of opportunities, as the high number of wildfires guarantees a lot of action in the skies.
The Italian firefighters, the Vigili del Fuoco, are true heroes who fight relentlessly against the flames each summer. Whether in the rugged mountains or across the flat plains, they face extreme heat, dangerous conditions, and long hours to protect people, homes, and nature from devastating fires.
One of the most iconic aircraft in their fleet is the Canadair CL-415 “Super Scooper.” This amphibious plane is specially designed for aerial firefighting, capable of scooping thousands of liters of water from nearby lakes or the sea in just seconds. Its ability to make repeated water drops with precision makes it an invaluable tool in the battle against wildfires.

One of the most iconic aircraft in their fleet is the Canadair CL-415 “Super Scooper.” This amphibious firefighting aircraft was developed in the 1990s as the successor to the legendary CL-215. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW123AF turboprop engines, giving it the strength and reliability needed for demanding low-level flying in mountainous terrain. The CL-415 can scoop up to 6,140 liters (1,621 US gallons) of water in just 12 seconds during a skimming run, and it can repeat this cycle dozens of times a day.
Its robust design, high-wing configuration, and excellent maneuverability make it perfectly suited for operating in challenging environments. Combined with the ability to mix foam concentrate with the water load, the Super Scooper has become one of the most effective aerial firefighting tools in the world. Watching these yellow-and-red aircraft roar low over lakes, scoop water, and then disappear into the smoke-filled skies above the hills of Italy is nothing short of breathtaking.
