The remains of President Jimmy Carter arrived in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, where members of Congress paid their respects at a service in the U.S. Capitol rotunda before Carter lies in state Tuesday and Wednesday.
A departure ceremony began in Atlanta before the Carter family accompanied the remains to Dobbins Air Reserve Base for the flight to Joint Base Andrews outside Washington. The Navy veteran's remains then transferred to a hearse and traveled by motorcade to the U.S. Navy Memorial, before being transferred from the hearse to a horse-drawn caisson for a procession to the U.S. Capitol.
