Losar is a festival that celebrates the Tibetan New Year, and is celebrated in various locations across the world, including Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, and India. The word "Losar" is Tibetan for "new year".
Here are some ways the festival is celebrated:
Prayers: Prayers are offered, and religious flags are hoisted on houses
Lighting lamps: Butter lamps are lit in houses, and prayer lamps are lit
Illuminating buildings: Buildings, houses, and religious places are illuminated
Sighting the moon: The first moon of the year is sighted
Songs and dances: Dances and songs are performed in honor of Ibex
Eating good food: Families gather to eat good food
Playing games: Men often play games such as archery, while women stay at home
Parties: Men and women often have parties at one of the households
Picnic lunches: Many families also go out to have picnic lunches
The exact dates of the festival depend on the location and tradition. In the Gregorian calendar, the festival is celebrated in February or March. In 2024, the new year began on February 10 and celebrations ran until the 12th of the same month.
