Huge quantities of munitions from both world wars of the last century lie on the seabed of the Baltic and North Seas. The shells of the munitions are rusting and toxic explosive compounds are already seeping into the marine environment. In the long term, the munitions pose a high risk to marine ecosystems and humans.
To this end, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) has launched a comprehensive, multi-year "Immediate Action Programme on Unexploded Munitions in the North and Baltic Seas" – the first precautionary programme in the world to guard against long-term hazards from unexploded munitions.
