The National Centre for the Performing Arts in China was completed and opened to the public in 2007, and it has now been 18 years. Its national-level status and its important location adjacent to the Great Hall of the People and Tiananmen Square destined this building to be controversial from the start of the project. Should it be designed by Chinese or foreigners? Should the design be more avant-garde or conservative? When the plan by French architect Paul Andreu was announced as the final scheme, it caused a huge uproar—this theater building was unexpectedly designed as an egg half emerging from the water, completely different from the surrounding buildings, and beyond many people's imagination of theater architecture. However, after 18 years, the controversy has dissipated. Some come here to watch performances, some to take photos, some to run, and some to dance square dances. This egg designed by a Frenchman has become a part of Beijing, a part of life.
This section documents the grand hall and the building's exterior.
