St John's Kirk is known locally as 'Auld Simon.' It was originally the Chapel of Lochwinnoch, held by Paisley Abbey. In 1692 a new church was built and in 1729 it was extended. By 1808 it was in very poor condition and was due to be demolished, however the local weavers asked for the clock and bell to be retained. The weavers maintained the building and the 1731 clock, with 'Auld Simon' probably being one of these weavers. A mortuary was built inside during WWI and during the 18th century part was used as a guard house to protect against body snatchers, hence the chimney for a fire to keep them warm. The weather vane is a plough with bird and wheatsheaf above and a rose, thistle, shamrock and arrow for the compass points.
