Het station ligt aan de spoorlijn Rotterdam Centraal - Dordrecht.
Op 1 juni 1964 werd de halte Lombardijen geopend. Deze halte bestond uit houten perrons en een keet voor de kaartverkoop. Op 12 september 1968 werd een nieuw station geopend. Onder de perrons, in de middenberm van de Spinozaweg, kwam een halte van tramlijn 2 naar IJsselmonde en tramlijn 12; deze was met een trap direct bereikbaar vanaf de perrons. Deze halte is inmiddels niet meer in gebruik; de trappen zijn nog wel aanwezig, maar afgesloten.
In 1996 werd het huidige stationscomplex geopend. Naast het station is sinds 2011 het Maasstad Ziekenhuis gevestigd. Tevens bevindt zich nabij het station een locatie van het Albeda College.
Per 11 december 2011 wordt het station enkel met sprinters bediend.
Minder bekend is dat er een metrostation in ruwbouw onder het station ligt, ooit aangelegd voor de Ridderkerklijn, die echter niet is gerealiseerd.

The station is located on the Rotterdam Central - Dordrecht railroad line.
On June 1, 1964, the Lombardijen stop was opened. This stop consisted of wooden platforms and a shack for ticket sales. On September 12, 1968, a new station was opened. Under the platforms, in the central reservation of Spinozaweg, came a stop for streetcar line 2 to IJsselmonde and streetcar line 12; this was directly accessible from the platforms by stairs. This stop is now no longer in use; the stairs are still present, but closed.
The current station complex was opened in 1996. Maasstad Hospital has been located next to the station since 2011. Also near the station is a location of the Albeda College.
As of December 11, 2011, the station is only served by sprinters.
Less well known is that there is a metro station under the station in rough construction, once built for the Ridderkerk line, which, however, was not realized.
