The Teesside 500 Group members travelled aboard Volvo Olympian Palatine Northern Counties (M223 SVN) to SYTT Open day to catch up on the ongoing restoration of their Daimler Fleetline Northern Counties JDC 544L (L544) .
Purchased new to Teesside Municipal Transport between 1971 to 1973 and these vehicles where unique to Teesside and 76 where built, with L544 being the last survivor. In Spring 1989 the group made an offer to purchase it from then Cleveland Transit Bus Company and has since been preserved and very busy on the rally scene and events and has covered a trouble free 1,250,000 miles. In 2018 it was sent to SYTT Rotherham for long term refurbishment of the rear chassis beams and has been the first heavy repair work since coming off service. More extensive than originally envisaged but new strengthening parts have been fabricated and manufactured as well as many other original parts overhauled and painted and refitted.
Still loads of work to do, and when it does become a rolling chassis again then the next stage of recommission will begin, when Its transported back to Teesside.
I did record some of the inspection ... whom knows I could edit a video ?
It was a very busy Sunday and many visitors tried to keep dry and out of the weather in the depot, whilst others hopped aboard the many buses on the timetable.
I hopped aboard this fantastic condition Leyland National 2 KWA 22W (22) , the cab area must have had a recent refurb as it looked like new. The interior seating looked amazing when I got off looking back to take a photo for the thumbnail image as well as being brave enough to hop off the bus at Chapeltown in the pouring rain to also use in the thumbnail photo for this video. This video was a total grab shot from getting off the route master, running across trying to keep myself and the camera lens dry and filmed this all hand held around the drivers cab .. it seems okay I rewatched it enjoyed it kept it raw as is in places and edited out the boring bits, includes all the rattles and bangs and the climb up those steep inclines and traffic light starts pulling away in this torrential rain, looking for the wiper switch all makes it what you would see and hear if you where sat behind the driver too.
22 was new in December 1980 and new to the SYPTE's Doncaster Depot, it entered service in an all over cream livery, being diverted from a National Bus Company order.
It is now owned by Mr S Barker and fully restored and preserved in the immaculate condition which I saw it on the day ... amazing well done sir !
It was a real pleasure to hop aboard and enjoy the ride.
I hope you all enjoy the brief video ride also.
I will try and compile another video, as I enjoyed a few rides around Rotherham area Chapeltown and never recorded much video content as the buses where busy and too busy chatting to old friends also attending the rally and catching up, and enjoying the rides and sounds of yesteryear.
Hold Tight Please !
Catch you all on the next one .........
