Cappella Palatina (Palatine Chapel) built between 1132 and 1148 as a part of the Royal Palace of the Norman king is a jewel of medieval Arab-Norman-Byzantine art and architecture. The palace stands on an ancient ruins of the first settlement.
First were Arab rulers who erected a castle on the same site in the 9th century. After the conquest of Sicily in 1072 by Norman Knights, Norman kings remodeled the existing building according to their needs separating it into two distinct parts: administrative and residential. Later on in 1132 king Roger II added the Palatine Chapel or Cappella Palatina to the complex.
