Birch Bathroom Towel Rack

Made from Birch with various wood inlay plugs.
(Oak, Maple, Bubinga, Wenge, Palisander, Walnut, Cherry, Bibolo, Padouk and Purpleheart.)

The overall shape of this rack I happen to have as a store bought item laying around in my shop. I likened the design and applied my own twist. Instead of tracing the store bought one I lay down some overall measurements on the piece I am working with. It ain’t no rocket science, you can do this too if desired so. Challenge for me was to align the plugs throughout a depth of 60+mm to then resaw the blank, resulting in two identical pieces on a somewhat shitty drill press.

Please let me fill you in:
Not all figured wood tears out on my particular jointer/ thicknesses planer but it does occur more then i’d like it to happen, it all depends on the grain I'm working with. This workpiece remains square thoughtout the process by referencing off the two initially machined surfaces on the jointer, also when taken to the bandsaw or belt sander. (as a side note) I didn’t swap the bandsaw blade for cutting the convex for a smaller one just because this is a one off and cutting relief cuts gets the job done. I used Osmo 1011 (1X) to let it soak in the deeper flamed grain to then sand it down to the light coloured surface wood again. Osmo topoil is applied 3X with a light 1000 grid sanding in between coats. The plugs I cut in endgrain as I reckoned they are easier to pound in a 70mm workpiece without breaking, and this is definitely true. However, having the face grain shown would have accentuated the colours from the different species used by far! Also, I opted for drilling through the workpiece entirely to relieve pressure when driving in the plugs home and this was a good decision. The two sides are cut on the bandsaw and “surfaced” on the belt sander. The sacrificial/ off-cut piece contains the tearout as introduced by the jointer as well as the blowout introduced by driving the plugs home. Still reading? That's awesome!
