History of Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh
Sukhna Lake is a man-made lake, created in 1958 by Le Corbusier and engineer P. L. Verma by damming the seasonal Sukhna Choe stream.
It was designed as a peaceful, vehicle-free zone for walking, boating, and relaxation in the foothills of the Shivalik Hills.
Over the years, siltation became a major problem, so the catchment area was planted with vegetation, and in 1974 the stream was diverted to reduce silt entering the lake.
The lake is an important wetland and bird sanctuary, attracting many migratory birds in winter.
It’s home to the Lake Club, Asia’s longest rowing channel, and is a major cultural and recreational landmark for Chandigarh.
Le Corbusier had a deep emotional connection to the lake—his cousin Pierre Jeanneret’s ashes were immersed there in 1970.
Today, conservation efforts continue to protect the lake from shrinking due to silt and low rainfall.
