A lively New Orleans street-corner groove carried by upright bass, crisp parade-style drums, and playful brass call-and-response… whatever it is, it’s magic.
Jazz History Note: Webster Young – trumpeter and cornetist born December 3, 1932. Growing up in Washington, D.C., Young's talent caught the ear of Louis Armstrong, who mentored the 12-year-old after hearing him play. He later moved to New York, sharing bandstands with John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Jackie McLean, and Hampton Hawes.
Young is best remembered for For Lady (Prestige, 1957), a lyrical, Miles Davis-influenced tribute to Billie Holiday. His career was tragically cut short when he died in 1966 at just 34, but his work remains a quiet gem of the hard bop era.
