Recently, I acquired a bootleg VHS of Michael Mann's HEAT (1995) that was filmed by an theater goer from it's original theatrical run. Apart from being filmed with a camcorder (back in the day of vhs bootlegs) it looks like this vhs was a copy of copy. The quality is not great but what is really special is the audience reactions. This was before anyone had seen it and way before streaming, youtube, dvd's and blu rays where you'd have to wait months for a vhs release of the film either to purchase or taking a trip to blockbuster to rent it. This was also before a lot of moments of the film became memes. I visited a theater in Brooklyn in 2018 to see a re-release of Heat and every 2 seconds the audience would laugh at moments that have been made unintentionally funny (at least to them) which tainted the experience a bit for me. But, with this VHS bootleg, you can experience genuine and appropriate audience reactions. You can hear the cheers, laughs (accordingly) and the gasps of film goers who had probably only seen brief trailers and tv spots or even word of mouth of the film. I find this really special because so much is given away nowadays and you can know the in's and out's of a film before it is even released in theaters. It's crazy to think that not too long ago, this was an alien concept but this is how it was and I desperately miss those days!
