320HP BMW 2002 w/ 10,000+ rpm M12/7, 2.0L 4-Cylinder Engine singing on hillclimb | Hemberg 2024

As a true fan of how high-revving, naturally-aspirated engines with individual throttle bodies sound like, for many years I've dreamed of seeing this fantastic BMW 2002 created by Minichberger Motorsport and driven by Mario Minichberger, owner of the homonymous company. His creations are very famous in the world of European hillclimb racing but I must admit this 2002 has that little bit extra.

Mario has been competing in the Berg-Cup wiith this 2002 since 2019. Five years of construction time went into this hillclimb monster and I imagine not much is left of the original car. Starting from the engine, the original 2.0-liter M10 unit has been replaced by a modified version of the famous BMW M12/7, a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine, derived from the M10, and developed for the European Touring Car Championship and later used in the dominant March 782 Formula 2 car. In Mario's 2002 the M12 is able to produce 320 hp and rev up to 10,800 rpm.

Another important change to make the car more competitive is a careful weight reduction. In fact all the panels and body parts of this 2002 should now be made of carbon fiber. Its weight is around 800 kg.

A couple of weeks ago I managed to record this 'Minichberger' during the 2024 Bergrennen Hemberg, an hillclimb race located in the North-Est of Switzerland and the first round of the 2024 Swiss Hillclimb Championship (Schweizer Bergmeisterschaft). The course is 1,758 meters long, starting from an altitude of 755 meters and ending at 912 meters above sea level, with an average slope of 8.94%. The first half is quite slow with short straights and several tight corners but after a wide U-turn the course becomes faster and more technical with a series of curves that can be driven at higher speeds.
