MILE WIDE TORNADO hits Nebraska! Close Range Twisters & Big Hail - Full Storm Chase 4/27/25

A powerful 1.25 mile wide wedge tornado and several twisters tore through the Nebraska sandhills on Sunday, 4/27/25. The wedge crossed Hwy 2 right in front of us! It formed in the same spot that my storm chasing tour guest and I watched a tube tornado rope out only minutes earlier, just South of Bingham. As the mesocyclone spun on top of us, I decided to drive East as it looked apparent another twister would touch down very soon. When I turned around, the wedge was quickly forming and slowly moving Northeast. It churned in the sandhills and Cherry County for 74 minutes, moved 19 miles and had a max width of 1.25 miles. Since there was not much to hit in the sandhills, there was little damage done and no injuries. It was rated an EF-2 by the National Weather Service. Unfortunately, this tornado did partially de-rail a train and damaged a farmhouse and outbuildings in the area.
I intercepted the storm about an hour before it produced the first tornado. I found a good viewing spot (which can be very hard in the sandhills) and watched as the most incredible tornado formed and moved our way. My tour guest and I watched the entire 12 minute lifecycle of the tornado while sitting in one spot. It was amazing!
We stayed just East of the wedge tornado as it moved NE into the sandhills north of Hwy 2. There were no roads through that area, so we watched until it was no longer visible. Another small satellite tornado formed just East of the wedge as I was filming.
The mothership structure of the supercell was absolutely breathtaking! We were able to view the entire storm as I got far enough ahead of it. We followed the storm into the night, along 97. It continued to produce tornadoes in the wide open country until 10:45pm CDT. The structure illuminated in the lightning flashes was stunning.
This was truly one of the most incredible storm chasing days of my life!
