Our trip coincided with a significant midge hatch, sometimes referred to as "fish flies" or "mayflies." These water insects show in substantial numbers and provide walleyes with a plentiful, simple feeding source. Because game fish concentrate on feeding on midges, stoneflies, caddisflies, and other emergent insects—especially those from soft-bottom zones or shallow vegetation—this oversupply can make fishing challenging.
However, in the words of James Lindner, sometimes you just have to make them bite! Anglers must adjust their strategy to match this delicate, natural food source when walleyes are voracious on bugs. Watch the video to learn how to catch walleyes during the bug hatch.
