The orchestral accompaniment to his French Horn Concerto is freely composed around a highly original interpretation of the key of D minor, with strong octatonic colouring leaning persistently towards E rather than a conventional dominant; meanwhile the horn spins through melodies derived from a generative six-note cell in purely linear fashion.
It is one of those works of which a second hearing is more rewarding than a first; in other words, it grows upon the listener.
