Amsterdam is sweltering under the summer sun, the city almost melting as the heat presses down on its streets. This ultra-long walking tour—more than 3 hours and 15 minutes—captures the slow, languid pace of a city basking in the warmth of a relentless summer day. It’s Wednesday around lunchtime, and the air is thick with heat, making every step feel deliberate and unhurried.
We begin our journey at NEMO, the science museum that juts out into the IJ, its green copper shell glowing under the midday sun. From here, we head towards Central Station, where the city’s pulse beats steadily, though even here, the usual rush is tempered by the heat. The crowds are thinner, with many visitors opting to escape the sun’s glare.
Our path takes us through the Wallen, the oldest part of Amsterdam, where the narrow streets offer a brief respite from the sun. The canals here are lined with houseboats, their occupants seeking shade under makeshift awnings. We drift towards Waterlooplein, where the flea market stands still, the vendors slow-moving, as if conserving energy for the cooler hours of the evening.
We continue through the downtown area, passing de Dam, where the Royal Palace and the National Monument stand tall and stoic under the bright sky. The square is less crowded than usual, the heat driving people to seek out the cool interiors of nearby cafes and shops. Rembrandtplein offers little shade, but its cafes are filled with people sipping cold drinks, trying to stay cool.
Our walk leads us to Vondelpark, where the city’s residents flock to find relief. The park is dotted with sunbathers and picnickers, their movements slow and deliberate. The ponds reflect the clear blue sky, offering a semblance of coolness that is more illusion than reality. Even here, the pace is slower than usual, the heat forcing the city into a rare moment of stillness.
From Vondelpark, we make our way to de Pijp, a neighborhood known for its vibrant atmosphere, though today it is subdued by the heat. The Albert Cuyp Market is quieter, the usual buzz of activity dulled by the sun’s relentless rays.
Our journey ends in Oosterpark, a green haven where the trees provide some much-needed shade. Here, people rest on benches, their faces turned towards the sky, as if waiting for a breeze that never comes. The park, like the rest of the city, moves at a slower pace, the heat forcing everyone to surrender to its rhythm.
This video isn’t just a tour of Amsterdam; it’s an immersion into the city’s very soul on a day when the sun dominates everything. We wander through its streets, feeling the weight of the heat, the slow pulse of the city as it moves through the height of summer. It’s a chance to experience Amsterdam in a different light, to see how the city and its people adapt to the warmth, and to find beauty in the stillness that summer brings.
Join me on this long, sun-soaked walk through Amsterdam, and let’s discover the city together, one slow, deliberate step at a time.
