EAST CROYDON - 18TH FEBRUARY 2025 - 1ST VISIT
East Croydon railway station's history traces back to July 12, 1841, when it opened as "Croydon." Initially built by the London & Brighton Railway, it underwent name changes, becoming "Croydon East" in 1846 and finally "East Croydon" in 1862. Over time, the station expanded, notably in 1898, and has seen significant modernisations, including the construction of the current station building in 1992 and further improvements in the 2010s. It has grown to be a very important hub in the railway network of the south of London.
East Croydon's layout comprises six main line platforms, arranged as three island platforms, and three Tramlink platforms. This configuration efficiently handles the station's heavy traffic, facilitating services on the Brighton Main Line to Gatwick and Brighton, Thameslink services connecting to London and beyond, and the Oxted Line to East Grinstead and Uckfield. Essentially, it serves as a crucial interchange, enabling connections across a wide swathe of South London, Surrey, and Sussex.
To me, East Croydon is a good place to trainspot. This is because there are a variety of trains, frequent services, trains heading to various destinations, and the platform arrangement provides good train visibility.
Fun Fact: East Croydon is one of the UK's busiest train stations outside central London.
Hey! I hope you had fun watching! Thanks, and see you next time! 👍😃
