SANTA MONICA, CA — Tuesday, January 13, 2026 — Santa Monica Police officers on patrol along Ocean Front Walk detained a man Tuesday after observing him allegedly rummaging through a city-owned trash receptacle, an act prohibited under Santa Monica Municipal Code §5.08.300(a), which restricts the removal of trash from public containers.

According to observations at the scene, officers contacted the individual—who appeared to be unhoused—while they conducted an investigation related to the alleged ordinance violation. During the detention, officers determined the man had an outstanding warrant. He was taken into custody without further incident.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department’s daily arrest log, the individual was booked on a Santa Monica bench warrant and additional charges including Penal Code §166(c)(1), violation of a protective or stay-away order, and Penal Code §459, burglary, a felony offense. The charges listed in the arrest log are not associated with the initial trash-related contact observed along Ocean Front Walk and reflect existing court matters. All charges remain allegations pending adjudication.
