The Late Saroj Khan, lovingly known as Masterji, was one of India’s most iconic and influential choreographers, credited with shaping the language of Bollywood dance. Born as Nirmala Nagpal in Mumbai, she began her career as a child artist and later transitioned into background dancing before becoming an assistant to prominent choreographers. Her breakthrough came in the 1980s, and she went on to create some of the most memorable dance numbers in Indian cinema, especially through her legendary collaborations with stars like Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi, including timeless hits such as Ek Do Teen, Dhak Dhak Karne Laga, and Hawa Hawai. Over her five-decade career, she choreographed more than 2,000 songs, earning three National Film Awards and immense respect for elevating dance from decoration to storytelling. Revered as a mentor, disciplinarian, and creative force, Saroj Khan’s legacy continues to inspire generations of dancers and filmmakers around the world.
Saroj ji is being interviewed by Dr. Shan Chandrasekar as part of “ATN’s Tribute to 100 Years Of Indian Cinema” Television Series.
