In this bushcraft trip, I tasted ancient methods of outdoor cooking. Living close to nature, I explored how people once prepared their meals, using only fire and clay.
I build my bushcraft shelter using sticks from old dead trees that had already fallen, along with bark collected from the forest floor. I made sure not to harm any living trees.
The forest gifted me two beautiful birch boletes (Leccinum scabrum), my first mushrooms of the season. I cooked them with a bit sour cream and result was incredibly delicious. There’s something special about enjoying food you’re foraged yourself.
However, if you’re not absolutely sure about identifying wild mushrooms, please never eat them!
As part of my primitive cooking experiment, i tested baking bread on a stick over the fire. The bread was soft inside, with nicely toasted edges and a delicious smoky flavor.
For tea, I gathered blackberry leaves and blossoms, white clover flowers and young pine tips. This wild herbal blend had a refreshing forest aroma with subtle sweet notes.
I also tried baking majrova (Swedish turnips) in clay. I wrapped them in the coals overnight and by morning, I had a warm, nutritious breakfast waiting for me. The slow cooking gave them a soft texture and deep, earthy flavor.
On top of that, I was lucky to find the first wild strawberries of the season, small, fragrant and incredibly sweet. A true gift from the forest.
I’m grateful for this experience and excited to keep learning from nature, step by step.
