This account from The Unfinished Tales by J.R.R. Tolkien tells of the Istari and how they first came to Middle-earth. As well, in the 'Essay on the Istari' we learn of the Saruman's jealousy of Gandalf and how the white wizard first began to spy upon the Shire.
Tolkien's 'Essay on the Istari' contains many different possibly versions. I have done my best to find compile these iterations into a complete narrative. However, there are still some inconsistencies and I have had to make slight edits to fit them together. I have also included section iii from 'The Hunt for the Ring' which details Gandalf, Saruman and the Shire.
