The new model with the long name Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance V is a hybrid with a two-liter turbo four.
The engine output is 476 hp and 545 Nm. It works in tandem with a nine-speed planetary automatic transmission AMG Speedshift MCT-9G, which has a wet clutch instead of a torque converter. Plus, there is a starter-generator with a belt drive, which helps when starting off.
An electric module is installed on the rear axle, which includes an electric motor with an output of 204 hp and 320 Nm, a two-speed transmission (second gear is engaged after 140 km / h) and an interwheel differential with an electronically controlled lock.
In addition, there is a "mechanical" transmission 4Matic +. In hybrid mode, the cardan transmits traction from the internal combustion engine to the rear axle. But it can also be used while driving in pure electric mode (up to 125 km/h). If the rear wheels slip, the electronics can transfer part of the torque from the rear electric motor to the front axle using the standard transfer case and interaxle clutch.
The lithium-ion traction battery was developed specifically for AMG models. It is located above the rear axle, operates at 400 volts, weighs 89 kg and has a modest capacity (6.1 kW∙h), but boasts a high level of energy exchange. In nominal mode, it produces 70 kW, and in peak power can reach 150 kW (that is, exactly 204 hp), but for no more than ten seconds. The battery can be charged from a socket, and four levels of recuperation are provided. The range in pure electric mode is only 13 km.
The peak output of the hybrid power plant is 680 hp and 865 Nm, although the developers cleverly operate with the figure of 1020 Nm, which is obtained taking into account the gear ratios of the two-stage gearbox of the electric motor.
The hybrid has a fully controlled chassis: at low speeds, the rear wheels can turn at an angle of up to 2.5 degrees in antiphase with the front wheels, improving maneuverability, and on the highway they deviate by 0.7 degrees synchronously with the front wheels, increasing stability.
