The Challenger expedition of 1872-1876 was one of the greatest oceanic expeditions in history, and fundamentally changed the way that we think about the ocean. In four years they sailed 68,890 miles, established 362 sample stations and made 492 depth soundings. Among the samples recovered were manganese rock nodules. It has been estimates that the oceans contain a million million tons of rock nodules...and they have the most remarkable internal structures....
