Handel’s Word Painting Brilliance - Composer Insights

A detailed look through the opening of the first Chorus movement in Handel’s “Messiah”. In particular word painting is explored, namely how Handel paints the text “And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed”. Choice of key and tempo are considered, along with choice of metre, use of rhythmic devices such as hemiola. Additionally, articulation and dance character are considered. This composer insights lesson gives insight into painting words for composers and illustrates this aspect of the genius of Handel.
