CNN Reporter Unveils the Facts About Navy Veterans Defamation Case

CNN reporter Alex Marquardt took the stand on Monday morning, revealing how CNN compiled the story about plaintiff Zachary Young before publishing an alleged defamatory article about the former Navy veteran. Marquardt contacted individuals who had been in touch with Young regarding the alleged Afghan rescue plan, for which Young was reportedly charging large sums of money. Marquardt stated his belief that Young was exploiting people in need in exchange for financial gain.

Zachary Young, a U.S. Navy veteran, is suing CNN over a 2021 segment that aired on “The Lead with Jake Tapper.” Young claims the network falsely painted him as an “illegal profiteer” exploiting “desperate Afghans” with “exorbitant” extraction fees amid the fallout of President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Young is the president of Florida-based corporation Nemex Enterprises. His claims sue CNN for defamation per se, defamation by implication, group libel and trade libel, claiming that his efforts to save lives in Afghanistan as a security consultant were distorted by “lies published for sensationalism.”
