The Pratt & Whitney R-4360 "Wasp Major" is one of the most impressive radial engines ever produced, a true testament to American engineering and innovation in aviation. Developed during World War II and used extensively in the post-war era, this 28-cylinder behemoth powered some of the most iconic aircraft of the 1940s and 1950s. With its distinctive 4-row radial configuration, the R-4360 was the largest piston aircraft engine ever mass-produced by Pratt & Whitney, generating up to an astounding 3,500 horsepower. Nicknamed the "Corncob" due to its unique design, the engine featured a complex mechanical setup that combined power, reliability, and an ability to operate in some of the most challenging flight conditions.

This powerhouse was initially designed to meet the demands for higher-performance engines during WWII, and it found its way into a variety of notable aircraft, including the Boeing B-50 Superfortress, the Convair B-36 Peacemaker, and the Hughes H-4 Hercules — better known as the "Spruce Goose." The R-4360 was crucial to strategic bombers and heavy transport aircraft, enabling them to achieve long-range missions that helped define American air dominance. Despite its enormous size and power, this radial engine managed to deliver smooth and reliable performance, a feat that engineers of the era considered revolutionary.

One of the reasons the Pratt & Whitney R-4360 is so famous is its incredible engineering complexity. With 56 spark plugs, 56 pushrods, and 56 valves, maintaining and operating this engine required an exceptional amount of precision. The engine also employed an innovative cooling system that allowed each of its 28 cylinders to operate at optimum temperature during long missions. This engineering marvel was not just about raw power; it was also a symbol of the transition from piston-driven engines to early turbojet and turboprop technology. While the R-4360's era was relatively short-lived due to the rapid advancement of jet engines, its legacy endures as a pinnacle of radial engine design.

Today, few surviving examples of the R-4360 can be seen in aviation museums and restoration projects, where enthusiasts and historians marvel at the mechanical ingenuity and power that once dominated the skies. It serves as a reminder of the extraordinary lengths engineers went to in order to push the boundaries of aviation technology and how this engine, despite its complexity, set the standard for large piston-driven aircraft engines of its time. Dive deep into the history, power, and legacy of the Pratt & Whitney R-4360 "Wasp Major" in this detailed exploration, and learn why it remains a standout piece of aviation history.
