“What a Friend We Have in Jesus” is a hymn written in 1855 by Christian poet Joseph M. Scriven, originally composed as a poem to comfort his mother back in Ireland.
The well-known melody was later created in 1868 by Charles Crozat Converse, giving the hymn the musical form recognized around the world today.
It has since become one of the most beloved and frequently sung hymns in Christian churches worldwide.
