ELIN BRIMHEIM HEINESEN is a Faroese singer and songwriter, who has been an active music artist on the Faroese music scene since the seventies. She is a soloist but has performed with several other artists from time to time – the co-work with Faroese composer/producer Kári Jacobsen being the most well-known, with whom she published their debut album NALJA in 1988, and the co-work with the band Ad Libitum with whom she published the album “Yndisløg” (Treasured Songs) in 2010.
Although she hasn’t released more than one album until now with (half the) music written and composed by herself, her songs have none the less been very well received and popular in her home country.
Her long-awaited album "Handan stjørnurnar", was released Saturday, July 7th 2018, and contains 12 tracks written and composed by herself. It is in fact her debut album as a soloist. The song “Tú vart altíð har” is the second single from the album.
TÚ VART ALTÍÐ HAR
“Tú vart altíð har” (You Were Always There) is a melancholic pop song, 3 minutes and 32 seconds long, which some may think resembles NALJA's music style. Elin originally wrote this song in the early 90's, just a few years after she and Kári Jacobsen released the NALJA cassette tape.
Although this in a way seems like a happy pop song at first glance, one soon realizes that the basic feeling and the content of the song lyrics are that of melancholy. One of Elin's grandmothers had just passed when she wrote the song, so the original song was actually about missing her grandmother, but Elin thought that melody and lyrics did not fit so well together, so later she wrote new lyrics for the song at a time when a whole new life situation took place.
“The new song lyrics are about when a relationship ends, where you would like everything to be different and you would like to get one more chance”, says Elin, continuing: “Love does not necessarily disappear because two people find out that their lives just don’t fit together. You may feel emptiness and sadness for losing a person you care about even if you know that it will never work, no matter how much you try, because your personal dreams and goals just don’t match. You know you both would lose too much of yourselves if you were to continue together.”
