Tops Diner — #1 Diner in America? Fried Chicken, French Toast & Secret Syrup

Tops Diner in East Newark, New Jersey has been serving customers since 1942 and is often called the #1 diner in New Jersey — in the diner capital of the world.

We had to see if the legend was real.

I ordered the roasted fried chicken and brush French toast — pressure fried, hand-battered crispy chicken tenders served with thick cut brush French toast, powdered sugar, warm syrup, butter, and a secret syrup you can only get at Tops Diner.

Vacay-J ‘D’ went with something completely different — crispy southern fried wild blue catfish served with cheddar grits loaded with onions and peppers, two farm fresh eggs cooked to order, chef’s hot sauce, and multigrain bread.

We also visited their barista bar for gourmet salted caramel lattes and finished with desserts from their on-site bakery including the famous Crazy Carrot Cake and a Key Lime Cheesecake.

The modern retro atmosphere, incredible service (shoutout to our waiter Carlos), and the food made this feel like a diner experience unlike anywhere else.
