Watch Hughie in this indepth, very detailed video that will show you how to fit a carpet stair runner to winding steps. In this case a very fetching herringbone pattern in a faux sisal. Fitted in a method called 'grip and pin'.
Fitting a carpet runner to a winding staircase may seem tricky, but with the right technique, you can fit it yourself - as long as you like a little DIY. Unlike straight staircases, winding stairs require more precision and attention to detail due to their curved shape and varying tread widths.
Start by measuring each step individually, as winding stairs are rarely uniform. Cut the underlay to fit each step and secure it in place. Next, position your runner centrally, ensuring even spacing on both sides. You may need to create small relief cuts at the corners to help the carpet lie flat without creasing.
Use a staple gun or carpet tacks to fix the runner in place, beginning at the top and working your way down. Smooth and stretch the carpet as you go, adjusting for the curve of the stairs. Pay extra attention to the turns – take your time to ensure a snug, neat fit
