In this session, Professor Miles Berry explores how generative AI is reshaping teacher education and why critical thinking must remain at the heart of professional learning. He introduces AI as “predictive text on steroids” and demonstrates how RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) can reduce hallucinations by grounding AI outputs in real policy documents.
Miles shares several tools developed at Roehampton, including:
• An ITT policy bot that answers trainee questions using DfE and Ofsted guidance
• A lesson plan review bot trained on Rosenshine and key pedagogical texts
• A post-lesson analysis bot that offers low-stakes, reflective feedback
• Behaviour-scenario simulations with guardrails to prevent misuse
• A one-to-one conversation practice bot to prepare trainees for pupil interactions
He emphasises that while AI can support accessibility, feedback, and professional reflection, it must never replace the cognitive work essential for learning. Citing Willingham’s “Memory is the residue of thought,” Miles argues that over-reliance on AI risks hollowing out teacher expertise.
The session ends with research showing that thoughtful use of ChatGPT can increase metacognition, self-efficacy, and higher-order thinking in trainee teachers—when used as a mirror for thinking rather than a shortcut.
