OLD Thick Water to make Thick Black Dye for Tie Dyeing ~ Great for Dye Painting

Okay, so after making a few more batches with different results, I determined that it works best if you blend the sodium alginate in the hot water by itself it first and it will dissolve faster and thicken the water immediately. This is the Thick Dye for Dye painting, I learned this recipe from Ed Capek.

I start by blending the Sodium Alginate with HOT water ( I now use water that I heat on the stove to about 170F) until it dissolves completely, I will blend for a while, then let it rest and then come back and blend some more. I test it by touch, it should feel smooth between your fingers, any lumps at all mean you should blend some more). Then add the salt and urea and blend until it feels smooth again. Then, I let it cool completely before I add any dye to it as it will thicken more as it cools, once it is cool, then I will test the thickness, and then I add some to a separate cup and add some plain water and blend it, then I put it in a bottle and squirt some on white paper towel to check the thickness/consistency of the thick water... I want it to soak in a bit, but not spread much... you will have to find the thickness you prefer depending on what you are doing with it. If you are painting with it, then thick is good, but if you want to squeeze it out of a bottle, then you will need to thin it down a bit.

When I make the thick black dye, I use 6 oz of the thick water and add a heaping tbsp of black dye, so probably 5-6 tsp of dye powder and blend well.
