Before you dive into your Spectrum Stitch Swoncho, let’s talk gauge!
Getting gauge isn’t about perfection—it’s about making sure your finished swoncho fits and drapes the way it’s meant to. In this lesson, I’ll show you how to make a split single crochet gauge swatch in the round, which is exactly how the swoncho is worked.
👉 Use the same yarn and hook you plan to use for your actual project so you can make the most accurate adjustments.
👉 The magic number we’re aiming for is 4 stitches per inch in split single crochet or 16 sts over 4" (10 cm).
If your stitches are too tight or too loose, you can simply change your hook size until you match the pattern gauge. That’s the key to a swoncho that fits like a dream!
Let’s swatch smart so you can stitch with confidence! 💖
✨ Gauge Swatch Instructions ✨
Project is worked in joined rounds of split single crochet. Join is made by removing hook from free loop, insert hook under top 2 loops of first st from back to front, replace free loop and pull through.
With color A
Chain 30, join with a slip stitch to the first chain to form a ring -- 30 chains.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in each sc around the chain. Join to first sc with invisible join -- 30 sc.
Round 2: Split sc in each sc around, join to first sc.
Round 3-6: Split sc in each split sc around, join to first split sc.
Extend the loop on hook and remove hook.
Using a tape measure or a gauge measure, measure the swatch.
If your stitches are too tight (too many stitches per inch) you need a bigger hook or extend the first loop of the stitch a bit more.
If your stitches are too big (too few stitches per inch) you need a smaller hook or don't extend the first loop of the stitch as much.
✨ Do not pull out the swatch when complete. Put is aside to use later.
