Travel Geeks online: adventures in the Yukon wilderness | National Geographic Traveller (UK)

Our latest online panel discussion focuses on the outstanding outdoor adventures on offer in the northern Canadian territory of the Yukon.

We'll discover the mountains, icefields and rivers of Canada’s last frontier, and find out about the Yukon’s rich living history. This natural wonderland offers a chance to truly get away from it all — and we’ll be sharing advice on planning inspiring itineraries, as well as revealing how best to immerse yourself from home.

Wildlife watching
The Yukon is unlike anywhere else in the world. Rugged, remote and beautiful, it’s a place to embrace the great outdoors. It's a haven for North American wildlife, too — there are two moose for every human, and two humans for every bear. From grizzly and black bears, wolves, moose, musk ox and caribou, to lynx, coyote, wolverine, Dall sheep and hoary marmots, avid wildlife watchers will have plenty to look out for.

History and culture
It's the 125th anniversary of the discovery of Klondike gold. To mark it, we’ll discuss the remarkable Gold Rush town of Dawson City, the pioneering Klondike women and how to get a flavour of the journey made by those who sought their fortune in the Yukon’s rivers and mountains. The area has a remarkably rich culture and history, with the heritage of the Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in First Nation woven into the Klondike way of life. We’ll discuss the opportunities to see First Nation artwork, hear the language and experience the vibrant culture.

See the Northern Lights
The Yukon is one of the world's best places to see the aurora borealis, due to its position relative to the Earth’s magnetic poles. From mid-August to mid-April, the light show is often visible after dark. We'll advise on how to immerse yourself in the territory’s other natural wonders, too — including dipping into hot springs — and the best places for a digital detox.

Active adventures
For those who want to get active in the great outdoors, we’ll explore the region's activities such as kayaking, hiking, horse-riding, rafting, ice fishing, mountain biking, snowmobiling and dog-sledding. If you’re seeking something a little calmer, we’ll look at opportunities for fishing, boating, flight-seeing and snow-shoeing.
