WEEKEND WOGAN 10th ANNIVERSARY SERIES - Show 24/35

12.36pm, live on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, 3 October 2010… ‘My Wife The Dancer’ written by Eddie Mascari and Edwin “Dutch” Wenzlaff.

One of the records my Dad had in his collection while we were growing up was ‘We Made It Happen’ by the golden-voiced, Engelbert Humperdinck. The track ‘My Wife The Dancer' was on that album and I loved it. I loved the vibe, the horns, Englebert’s uncharacteristically bluesy vocal, and even as a young kid, I knew it was a ‘cheeky’ lyric! 😉 And throughout the 80s, as a family, we used to settle around the TV every Sunday night to watch 'Live From Her Majesty’s’ which morphed into ‘Live From The Palladium’ by the end of the decade, hosted by the brilliant Jimmy Tarbuck. I used to daydream about performing on those stages and singing with the Alyn Ainsworth Orchestra… and the song I used to imagine myself doing was… you guessed it… ‘My Wife The Dancer’.

So when I was told that we were going to do a one-off special 'Weekend Wogan’ LIVE FROM THE PALLADIUM… and that Jimmy Tarbuck was going to be one of Terry's guests, choosing this song was a no-brainer! It also meant that some crazy, surreal, closing-of-a-circle was going to happen with my playing Jimmy Tarbuck on to the stage, HIS stage, with my own theme tune and with my own ‘orchestra’. Talk about childhood dreams coming true! 😊

My band, once again, turned in a phenomenal performance… and I’m sure you’ll agree that my sensational, talented backing vocalists, Kirstie Roberts, Sue Acteson and Chloe Buswell, rose to the ‘Palladium’ occasion and brought and little extra ‘something’ to the proceedings!!! 😜
