The long "a" sound is one of the five vowel sounds in English, and it is typically made by the letter "a" itself, as in words like "cave," "tape," and "flame."
When a silent "e" appears at the end of a word, it is known as a magic "e" or a silent "e," and it can change the sound of the preceding vowel. In the case of the long "u" sound, the silent "e" at the end of a word causes the "u" to make its long sound, as in words like "cape," "date," and "flare."
For example, the word "tap" has a short "a" sound, but when you add a silent "e" at the end, it becomes "tape," and the "a" now makes a long "a" sound.
Overall, the silent "e" can change the pronunciation of the preceding vowel in many words, creating what is known as a "silent e" or "magic e"
