. Afzal Khan’s cenotaph is at a distance of about 4km. North – west from the Shahpur gate of Bijapur fort and close to the vilalge of Takki or Afzalpur. There is a two-storeyed mosque too. AfzalKhana, a wazir under Muhammad and Ali – II commenced the construction of his own splendid tomb during his lifetime. However, he was not buried in the tomb, as he was killed by Shivaji in 1659 at Pratapgadh and was interred in the slopes of the Pratapgadh. This double storeyed mosque with two prayer chambers attached to it appears to have been finished in 1653 CE. An inscription on the mihrab gives the date A.H. 1064 and his name. The dome appears to have not been completed and was still in the hands of the architect when Afzal Khan was ordered to go with the ill – fated compaign against Shivajiin 1659. The building is constructed on a high basement and is comparatively very simple. The pyramidal rise of the roof from the walls of the cenotaph is rather pleasing. But the general effect of the building is spolied by the walls and arches below the cornice, being too squat and wanting in elevation. Close to this tomb, on the west and separated from it by a small cistern, is the attendant mosque.
