History of the Locomotives and the trackage. (For Nerds)
As I was visiting Stone Mountain. I took a rod on the Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad. The Railroad runs around the mountain with a duration of 40 minutes to complete the full circle. Along the way, you will pass an abandon section of track which is connected by a switch that’s is no longer in use. I will mention that in the video along the way. Our locomotive pulling our train today was Stone Mountain 6143 which is a FP7A by EMD. I also saw 6147 in the yard waiting for its day for operation to come. Both 6143 and 6147 are former Southern Railway diesels and are painted in the Central of Georgia Railway paint scheme with Stone Mountain written on it. GP7 Diesel 5896 was nowhere to be seen at the time I was there. 5896 is a former Chesapeake and Ohio Diesel. Anyone know what happened to 5896?
About the ride experience
The host/conductor of our train was very enthusiastic and informative to everything interesting that came up the path along our journey. Along the way, once you pass the yard, the train will stop at a small stage and you will watch a small show about Dino Town in the train car on. Although if you’re older, the show is basically more for little kids to enjoy. Also, the Conductor recommends the left side of the train for the best view of the mountain and some big scenic views. This train ride does not stop to let off passengers or to retrieve dropped items along the way. This is a simplified version of the train ride when the real duration of the trip is 40 mins.
