We have some ground works to do including a soak away and some raft foundations. Most people would hire a digger in these situations but my thinking was that they don't really depreciate that much, so i'd buy one, use it for the job, do it up a bit, then sell it at the end.
So i'm now the proud owner of a 1998 JCB 801 with 3 buckets!
As you can imagine I couldn't just leave it alone, so in the first 3 days i've been over the machine and found several points that need attention.
There is play in the bushes. I could use it as it is but for a bit of cost and a few hours labour I can replace the bushes and have a tighter machine. Worn bushes at the bucket end is really bad, as mud and dust gets compacted in the grease channels and can't flow in to the bushing.
So if i can give one tip it would be to pull your pins out and make sure the grease is getting through.
The other problem is a hydraulic oil leak on the ram that goes to the bucket. In this video i strip down the cylinder and remove the piston.
At the moment i'm loving working on this machine, everything seems accessible and sectional so far. The engine is a little Perkins 3 cylinder that just purrs away.
Please stay tuned for the next video where i'll be putting it all back together again!
