How to Prevent Mold & Mildew: Tips When Storing Boat

A common question with boaters is how to prevent mold on boat seats. This is often a problem – especially after storing your boat for the winter. But, once mold or mildew are present, getting rid of it can be a big challenge. Therefore, the best approach is to take precautions to prevent it from forming in the first place.

In this video, I explain what mold and mildew is and how to prevent mold on boat seats. I also discuss what you should and shouldn’t use to get rid of mold and mildew on marine upholstery.

After owning multiple boats over several decades, the key steps I’ve found to prevent mold are as follows:
• Make sure the interior of your boat is completely dry before covering it
• Open compartments to allow air flow
• Use a cover that will keep moisture out BUT is well ventilated (this is key)

And, if you store your boat outside or live in a very humid climate, you might want to place some moisture absorbers inside your boat to sop up any moisture or condensation.
