St. Peter Claver: The Slave of the Slaves | Apostle to the West Indies

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Today we honor St. Peter Claver (1581–1654), the great Jesuit missionary and Apostle to the West Indies. Known as the slave of the slaves, he dedicated his life to serving African slaves, Muslims, heretics, the condemned, and all souls in need of God’s mercy.

St. Peter Claver’s holiness was rooted in deep prayer and contemplation—often spending five or more hours in prayer before going out to serve. Through his sacrifice, patience, and humility, he baptized over 300,000 enslaved people, consoled the condemned, converted Muslims after decades of patient love, and performed miracles of healing, prophecy, and even raising the dead.

This sermon highlights:

His daily prayer routine and penance

His heroic service to the slaves and marginalized

His zeal for confessions (hearing up to 5,000 during Lent!)

His patience with long conversions, some taking 20–40 years

His humility, servitude, and the famous words from his notebook:
“Every time I do not behave like a donkey, it is the worst for me.”

St. Peter Claver reminds us: “There is no evangelization without contemplation.” His example calls us to love souls deeply, serve with humility, and prepare for death in the grace of God.
