"My artwork 'Shades of Blue' is a painting of water creatures. For this artwork I used outdoor paint on a wood panel. The reason I chose to use these animals because I have always loved the ocean. All these animals have deep meanings to me because they remind me of my family. The whale shark I have always associated with my family because my parents have told me and my siblingd stories of them diving and whale sharks swimming atop of them. My family and I went to Lady Musgrave Island on the Great Barrier Reef where we saw reef sharks and turtles and it was an amazing experience that I got to share with my family. I have gone on boating tours and seen humpback whales with my family. My artwork is for my family and our connection to the ocean. I wanted to compare the meanings for me and the meanings for distinct cultures in diverse parts of the world, for example the turtle stands for wisdom longevity and protection, or the humpback whale stands for communication and healing. All of these animals have different meanings, and I love learning about what they are, my intention is to communicate both of these through my artwork."
