Hand County Tornado Aug 30th 2020

This is an edited version of a Facebook LIVE video I took while storm spotting August 30th in Hand County, South Dakota. My intention was to spot near Huron given the weather conditions. I drove from Pierre to Wessington and waited there before moving north on 374th Avenue which is on the Hand/Beadle/Spink County line. I used Facebook LIVE on my personal page because I did not think we would have severe weather in our listening area. I am the News Director at KCCR Radio in Pierre and try to storm spot when possible and relay reports back to the station on air.

This is my first use of video editing software to shorten what was a 1 hour 40 minute Facebook live video. This is the first tornado I've evern encountered and by all accounts it was odd in it's north/northwest movement AWAY from the parent storm. It unfortunately took the life of 73 year old Paul Nelson (no relation) of Gettsyburg, owner of a world renowned pheasant hunting lodge.

I eventually turned the day from play to work, attempting to call in reports, however as you'll find out, cell reception north of Miller is terrible and I lose connection numerous time.
