As a young child in Budapest he became a circus star improvising on popular themes of the day and later, in order to make a living, he played in bars and astounded listeners with his dazzling virtuosity.
His coruscating arrangements were thought to be almost unplayable but today many young pianists such as Yuja Wang, Benjamin Grosvenor and earlier Cyprien Katsaris have risen to the challenge.
